I believe it's done without a thought going towards the harm it may do to the tree. I personally don't understand why people carve just their names into trees, but I kinda feel like the whole initials carved into a tree to symbolize love thing is really romantic. It captures perhaps an otherwise fleeting memory of feeling by engraving it into a tree that will be around at least for the next few decades.
