Tattered and Ragged.

This is the first color photograph I've posted in a few weeks. I was really bit by the black and white bug there for a bit. I originally converted this to black and white and it stood out pretty well, but looking at in color I felt it was much stronger. I love the subtle interplay of the different colors.

Welcome to the world Baby K!

I am so excited for my best friends Nick and Sara. They welcomed a bouncing baby girl into the world today! Six pounds, six ounces and cute as all get out. She shares a birthday with George Washington, Frederic Chopin, Julius "Dr. J" Erving, Steve "Crocodile Hunter" Irwin and Drew Barrymore. Pretty good company.

Rule of Thirds.

This is a basic design principle that every photographer, painter or designer learns in their first few intro classes at school. The rule states that an image should be imagined as divided into nine equal parts by two equally-spaced horizontal lines and two equally-spaced vertical lines, and that important compositional elements should be placed along these lines or their intersections. Most professors pound in to their student's heads to the point where it becomes almost impossible for a budding artist to even purposely break the tenet, lest they be judged by their teachers and peers. Every once in a while though, you have to bend the rules just a little. A Rule of Thirds loophole if you will.

Shapes.

I was never good at math in school. I always felt my brain was just not meant for such things. I would tell my teachers "I have a creative brain, not a mathematical brain". The funny thing is that no matter how much I hated math it has always had place in my photography. My brain may not be wired to see how the formulas work on a piece of paper, but I am constantly drawn to the geometry of the world around me. I see the world as a series of shapes and lines, which really isn't that different from many mathematicians at all.

招き猫.

Maneki Neko or "Beckoning Cat"; also known as Welcoming Cat, Lucky Cat, Money cat, or Fortune Cat. Sometimes incorrectly labelled Chinese Lucky Cat) is a common Japanese sculpture, often made of ceramic, which is believed to bring good luck to the owner. The sculpture depicts a cat (traditionally a Japanese Bobtail) beckoning with an upright paw, and is usually displayed—many times at the entrance—in shops, restaurants, pachinko parlors, and other businesses. Some of the sculptures are electric or battery-powered and have a slow-moving paw beckoning. In the design of the sculptures, a raised left paw supposedly attracts money, while a raised right paw protects it.
I bet you don't have to worry about this cat cleaning it's nether regions right next to your face as you lie in bed trying to read.

Alley Shindig.

Not sure if I want to attend a party here.
I love the randomness of city life. I feel very privileged that I get to walk to and from work every day. Traveling on foot just opens you up to the living breathing world around you. Little scenes like this would go completely unnoticed within the confines of a car. Also, I've found that I never show up to work pissed off and stressed out like I used to when I drove every day.
